Marriage or Civil Partnership Ceremony
If you have already booked your wedding or civil partnership please view our Your Ceremony page and fill out a Marriage or Civil Partnership Ceremony options form.
The Government launched a Law Commission review into marriage ceremonies in England and Wales on 29 June 2019. This is a two year programme so there is no change to the current laws for marriages.
In order to be legally married, there are words prescribed by law which you must say. These words declare that you are free to marry and will also contract you in marriage. You cannot mix or change these words with any others.
Couples can choose one set of prescribed words from each list below:
“I do solemnly declare that I know not of any lawful impediment why I, (your full name), may not be joined in matrimony to (your partner’s full name)”, or
“I declare that I know of no legal reason why I, (your full name), may not be joined in marriage to (your partner’s full name)”, or
By replying “I am” to the question “Are you, (your full name) free lawfully to marry (your partner’s full name)?”
“I call upon these persons here present to witness that I (your full name), do take thee, (your partner’s full name) to be my lawful wedded wife/husband”, or
“I, (your full name), take you (your partner’s full name) to be my wedded wife/husband” or
“I, (your full name), take thee (your partner’s full name) to be my wedded wife/husband”
If you would like extra vows or to personalise your ceremony, please have a look at our flexible packages.
You will need to ask two people, who may be friends or relatives if they will witness your marriage ceremony.
Your witnesses must be at least 16 years old, speak English and be able to understand the ceremony and their role in it. The witnesses will also have to sign the register.
In order for a Civil Partnership to be legally formed, the following declaration is taken from the schedule.
“I declare that I know of no legal reason why we may not register as each other’s civil
partner. I understand that on signing this document we will be forming a Civil Partnership with each other.”
Couples are given the choice on whether they wish to make this declaration verbally to each other before the signing.
